On May 1st, 2013, Canada Post honored the Chinese Canadian heritage with the issue of eight stamps featuring the gates which make the entrance to Chinatown in eight Canadian cities. These gates, known as paifang in Mandarin, were originally used to separate subdivisions in ancient Chinese cities.
The stamps feature Chinese watercolor styled illustrations of Chinatown gates from Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montréal, Toronto, Ottawa, and, Mississauga. In the bottom left of each stamp is the cities name in Mandarin.
Each stamp was created by an illustrator from each city from their preferred angle of the gate. This gives each stamp unique tones and highlights depicting each city from a local’s perspective.
